Loves Park takes its name from Rockford industrialist Malcolm Love, who bought a 236-acre riverside tract in 1901; the area stayed unincorporated for decades afterward, reportedly the largest unincorporated town in the country, until a referendum finally passed 808-513 on April 30, 1947, creating a city of about 4,505 residents under Mayor Homer E. Burton.
