Mechanical installations are named directly in Rockford's permit requirement, so this trade sits squarely inside it rather than at its edges. Equipment replacement, ductwork alteration and the electrical work that accompanies them are all permitted activity, reviewed through Construction & Development Services. The 120-square-foot accessory-structure exemption does not reach mechanical work of any size. A contractor who proposes swapping a furnace or a condenser without a permit is proposing to skip the inspection that exists to check the gas, venting and electrical connections.
