Cherry Valley grew around a mill on the Kishwaukee River following Joseph Griggs's 1835 settlement, with Eldwin Fitch platting the village in 1849 and formal incorporation following on January 31, 1857; the railroad's 1852 arrival added a second layer of early growth.
