A County Seat Since 1836
Belvidere has been the seat of Boone County since the county organized out of Winnebago County in 1836, and its Italianate courthouse went up in 1854-1855 for about $9,000 — giving the city a dense in-town core well before most of its neighbors.
Two HVAC Generations, Blocks Apart
On April 21, 1967, an F4 tornado — part of what the National Weather Service calls northern Illinois' worst tornado disaster — killed 24 people in Belvidere, 13 of them at the high school. Homes rebuilt immediately afterward got whatever heating and cooling technology was standard in the late 1960s, while Belvidere's 19th-century county-seat core still carries much older systems — two very different HVAC generations blocks apart. Winters here average lows near 14°F in January with frequent snow, so a furnace in either generation needs to be sized for real cold, not just replaced like-for-like.
